Connecting the System

In order to receive the times from Ubidium in your event file it will either need to be connected via the internet, or connected locally to your computer. 

The below options are sorted according to ease of use. 

Cloud Upload

Ubidium can be set to upload via the internet, this is the best option for connecting to your system as when doing so the system will be automatically displayed in the RACE RESULT 14 Timing tab and can be accessed and monitored from any location.

If you are renting Ubidium directly from RACE RESULT then this will be pre-configured on the system prior to shipping and upload will be enabled via the system's internal SIM card. 

Cloud upload can be enabled when an internet connection is available either via SIM, Ethernet or Wi-Fi. 

Connecting to the Internet

Mobile SIM Card

Ubidium can use any SIM card that supports data upload to connect via the 4G/LTE Modem. The external SIM card slot is located under the front flap to the top right of the panel. 

When Ubidium detects a SIM card it will automatically attempt to connect to the network, in most cases Ubidium will automatically detect the correct network settings to apply for your SIM card. If Ubidium is successfully connected to the mobile network it will show connected on the network information screen.

If you have a PIN set on the SIM card or if Ubidium is unable to automatically apply the correct settings then you may need to configure the SIM settings in the menu. 

To access the SIM settings, from the main screen press the third from the top Navigation Button to open the Network settings, from this menu press the third Navigation Button again to open the Mobile settings. Here you can now access the External SIM settings using the second Navigation Button. 

Use the corresponding Navigation Buttons to set the PIN, switch between Auto and Manual Provider settings, and set the Manual provider settings. 

Ethernet

If you already have a network setup which is providing an internet connection then you can connect Ubidium via an ethernet cable to your network. Ubidium has three ethernet ports located under the front flap, any of these can be used to connect to your network. An Ethernet connection is preferred over Wi-Fi as it ensures a more stable connection. 

In most cases, when you are working with an internet router, the network will be configured to automatically provide an IP address to the system, and Ubidium by default will use auto IP assignment (DHCP) when connected via ethernet.

When an ethernet cable is connected and Ubidium has been successfully assigned an IP address then the IP address of the system will be displayed on the network information screen for Ethernet. If the network additionally provides an internet connection then the cloud icon will be shown as either a black outline with no strikethrough or as a solid black icon to indicate that this is the currently active internet source. 

If Ubidium does not display an IP address or does not connect to the cloud you may need to set a fixed (static) IP address.

To access the Ethernet settings, from the main screen press the third from the top Navigation Button to open the Network settings, from this menu press the top navigation button to access the Ethernet settings. Here you can use the corresponding Navigation buttons along with the Directional Buttons to switch the Method between Auto and Manual IP assignment and configure the Manual (Static) IP address settings.

Wi-Fi

Similar to an Ethernet connection, if you already have a network setup which is providing an internet connection then you can connect Ubidium to this network via the system's on-board Wi-Fi. 

To configure the Wi-Fi connection you will need to open the Network settings by pressing the third from the top Navigation Button from the main screen, then press the second Navigation Button to open the Wi-Fi settings menu and use the corresponding Navigation Buttons and DIrectional Buttons to change the relevant settings. 

You will need to ensure that Mode is set to Client in order to connect to a network. 

To connect to a network, you first need to add this network under Manage connections, select Add then Select network. Ubidium will now automatically scan for all available Wi-Fi networks, find the corresponding network in the list, and press OK to select it, if necessary you will then need to enter the security Key and may need to configure the IP settings as described in the Ethernet section. 

Once the configuration has been set, press the back button to return to the Wi-Fi settings screen. Ubidium will automatically attempt to connect to networks that have been added. If the connection is not successful you may need to check the settings which can be accessed through the Manage connections menu and then selecting Edit. 

When Ubidium is successfully connected to a Wi-Fi network then the IP address will be shown on the network information screen for WiFi. If the network additionally provides an internet connection then the cloud icon will be shown as either a black outline with no strikethrough or as a solid black icon to indicate that this is the currently active internet source. 

 

Cloud Settings

Once Ubidium is connected to the internet you will need to first set your Customer ID on the system, this ensures that the data is linked to your RACE RESULT account. 

To do this open the Network settings menu by pressing the third from the top Navigation Button from the main screen, then press the bottom Navigation Button to open the Cloud settings Menu. 

To set the Customer number press the third Navigation Button and then use the Directional Buttons to set the correct number, note that the input accepts up to 6 digits so you may need to ensure to enter the correct number of leading zeros for shorter IDs. Once set, press OK to save the setting. 

Now use the top Navigation Button to set Enabled to YES. Once enabled the main screen will show a number next to Cloud, this is the number of passings which have been successfully uploaded to the server. 

LAN - Ethernet

Ubidium can be connected via ethernet cable directly to your computer or to any local network. Ubidium has three ethernet ports located under the front flap, any of these can be used to connect to your computer or network.

When connecting Ubidium via a local network you will need to run the RACE RESULT Web Server on your computer in order to connect through RACE RESULT 14. 

Note that many laptops do not offer an ethernet port as standard so it may be necessary to use a USB-Ethernet dongle if you plan to connect directly to your computer. 

When connecting to a network every device will be assigned an IP address, this is a unique identifier for each device. If your network contains a router then normally this will automatically assign IP addresses, otherwise, it may be necessary to manually assign IP addresses, particularly if you are connecting directly to your computer.

By default Ubidium will use automatic IP assignment, to manually set the IP address on Ubidium press the third Navigation Button to open the Network Settings, then press the top Navigation button to open the Ethernet Settings.

Set the Method to manual, press the top Navigation Button, and then use the arrow keys to select manual and press OK to confirm.

You can then set the IP address and other network settings by pressing the second Navigation Button to open the Static IP menu, then select the corresponding value you wish to set. 

 

Wi-Fi

Ubidium contains an internal Wi-Fi module which can be used as both a Client (to connect to wireless networks) or can also be set as an Access Point to provide a wireless network. 

When connecting Ubidium via a local Wi-Fi connection you will need to run the RACE RESULT Web Server on your computer in order to connect through RACE RESULT Software. 

If you plan to use Ubidium as a client then please refer to the Wi-Fi settings under the Cloud Upload Settings.

It is only recommended to use Ubidium as an Access Point if you plan to work entirely offline during your event. Note that Ubidium will not share any other internet connections via the Wi-Fi access point so it will not be possible to connect your computer to the internet through Ubidium. 

To enable the Ubidium access point press the third from the top Navigation Button from the main screen to open the Network Settings, then from here press the second Navigation Button to open the WiFi settings. 

Use the top Navigation buttons to first change the Mode from Client to Access Point, use the Directional Buttons to change the selection, and press OK to confirm.

By default the access point name (SSID) will be the device ID, but the password should be changed. To set the password then press the bottom Navigation Button to Configure Access Point, here you can change the SSID and Key using the corresponding Navigation Buttons.

It is not recommended to change the IP settings unless you are familiar with networking. 

When Ubidium is operating as an Access Point it will show as Connected to itself in the Choose connection information.
